He grew up watching his daddy serve this county Monroe Kiar showed him what it means to stand You don't just talk about the people that you fight for You show up at their door and shake their hand So when Marty made his promise to Broward He didn't send a mailer, didn't call He walked every street from Parkland down to Miramar Knocked on every door and learned them all Because some things can't be won from a podium Some things only happen face to face When you know the name of every single neighbor That's when you've earned the right to lead this place What's worth protecting? The house we built The dreams we saved The memories hanging in every frame What's worth protecting? Brianne and Camryn growing up with space to dream Kelly teaching children every day And Marty making sure their home is safe to stay When Broward needs somebody standing We know Marty We know Marty's there When Camryn came, he was still out knocking A new baby and a promise all at once Reading stories after dark, back at doors by morning Never quit, never flinched, never once A retired teacher opens up her mailbox Shaking hands, afraid of what she'll find She called Marty's office and somebody answered That's the kind of man that's hard to find Because a home is more than walls and numbers More than what the county says it's worth It's where Brianne and Camryn learned to laugh out loud It's the place that's been there since their birth What's worth protecting? The house we built The dreams we saved The memories hanging in every frame What's worth protecting? Brianne and Camryn growing up with space to dream Kelly teaching children every day And Marty making sure their home is safe to stay When Broward needs somebody standing We know Marty We know Marty's there When fraud comes knocking at your doorway When fear starts stealing sleep at night You don't want a speech or a press release You want someone willing to stand and fight Monroe taught him service is a calling Kelly taught him love is showing up Brianne and Camryn are the reason He gives this county everything he's got That's not politics That's Marty Kiar That's why Broward knows his name What's worth protecting? The house we built The dreams we saved The memories hanging in every frame What's worth protecting? The life we've made The people we love The future we're fighting to claim And when Broward needs somebody To stand up for what's right We know Marty We know Marty Protecting what's worth protecting For Brianne and Camryn For Kelly and this county For our homes For our future Tonight
Behind the story
Why this song exists
“What’s Worth Protecting” exists because public service isn't really about offices, titles or campaigns. It's about what people go home to. I've known Marty Kiar for years, and one of the things I've always admired is that I never saw politics completely consume the man underneath it. I watched his daughters grow up. I knew how important it was to him to get home and be their dad, including making it home to read to them at night even while campaigns and public service demanded so much of his time. That matters to me. Marty also comes from a family with deep roots in service and education. His father, Monroe, served his community. His mother was an educator. Kelly is a teacher. Service wasn't something Marty suddenly discovered when he decided to run for office. It's woven through the family he came from and the family he built. That's what I wanted this song to connect. Because when we talk about protecting people's homes, we're not really talking about buildings. We're talking about the pictures hanging on the walls. Kids growing up in their bedrooms. Dinner around the table. Bedtime stories. The place you come back to after a long day. The security of knowing that what you've worked your whole life to build still belongs to your family. “What’s Worth Protecting” takes Marty's public service and brings it all the way back home. His home. Your home. Every Broward family's home. Because behind all the politics, paperwork and public offices, that's the question that actually matters: What's worth protecting? The people we love and the lives we've built with them.
