Why this song exists
“Because of You” exists because nobody serves, campaigns or succeeds alone. I wrote this as a thank-you to the people behind Marty Kiar—the volunteers, supporters, friends and family members who give their time, their energy and sometimes just their belief that the person they're supporting is worth showing up for. I've known Marty for years, and one of the things I've always appreciated about him is that his connection to Broward is personal. He knocks doors. He talks to people. He remembers that public service happens one human being at a time. But there are people on the other side of every one of those doors too. There are volunteers making calls, putting out signs, attending events, talking to neighbors and giving away evenings and weekends. There are people lending their names and reputations to someone they believe in. There is family making room for all the time public service takes away. Those people deserve to feel seen too. So while some of the songs I wrote for Marty celebrate the man and his years of service, “Because of You” turns the spotlight around. It's for everybody who showed up. Everybody who helped. Everybody who believed. Everybody who made the journey possible. Sometimes the most important thing you can say to the people standing behind you is also the simplest: Thank you. We got here because of you.
