Behind the story
Why this song exists
“Build It Strong” exists because I wanted to show LaTeresa Jones what storytelling through music could do. LaTeresa came into my life through someone I was dating roughly eight or nine years ago. She's an interesting character, and over the years I've watched her continue to step forward and run for public office. When I saw that she was running again, I wasn't working from some enormous creative brief or months of campaign strategy. I took her campaign poster. And I turned it into a song. That was really the experiment. I wanted her to hear the difference between seeing campaign ideas printed on a page and hearing those same ideas come alive through music—ownership, community, families, faith, opportunity, accountability and building something stronger. “Build It Strong” became a demonstration of what Victory Voice Media can do with someone's existing story. Take the things they already believe. Find the human thread running through them. Then give those ideas a voice people can actually feel and remember. LaTeresa loved the song. So I gave it to her. It became my gift to her campaign—and one of the clearest examples of why I believe stories don't always need more words. Sometimes they need music.
