Why this song exists
“Are You an SOB?” exists because years ago, Broward County ran one of those marketing ideas that was so good I never forgot it. The first time I saw people talking about being an SOB, I remember thinking, what in the world—why is everybody proudly calling themselves sons of bitches? Then I found out what it meant: Supporter of Broward. I loved it. The original Supporter of Broward campaign was created in 2020 as an effort to encourage people to support local Broward businesses during an incredibly difficult economic period. It wasn't my campaign and this isn't its official song. But the idea stuck in my head because it was funny, provocative, unmistakably Broward, and impossible to ignore. Years later, when I sat down and created a collection of songs around Marty Kiar and his years of service to Broward County, I remembered it. Marty has spent years showing up for Broward—knocking doors, meeting people, serving in different roles and remaining deeply connected to the community where he grew up. So I decided to have some fun with it. “Are You an SOB?” became the loud, playful member of the Marty collection—a song built around the idea that being a Supporter of Broward is something worth being proud of. And yes, part of why I wrote it is still because the whole thing makes me laugh. Sometimes great marketing gets your attention. Really great marketing stays in your head for years. This one stayed in mine.
