Everybody’s got a headline Everybody’s got a take Thirty seconds, bright red letters Telling me what I should hate I’ve heard it shouted, I’ve heard it spun Heard it dressed up just for fun But I learned a long time ago Noise ain’t truth just ‘cause it’s loud If it fits too clean, too neat Someone’s selling more than speech So I read the fine print I slow it all down I don’t need a marching band To tell me how to sound I ask a second question When they promise something quick I don’t buy the headline I read the fine print They say pick a side, pick it fast No time left to hesitate If you pause to think it through They call that fear, they call that late But I’ve seen what happens When thinking’s gone When being right matters More than being wrong If they’re rushing me to choose I’m already smelling fumes So I read the fine print I slow it all down I don’t need a megaphone To stand my ground I ask a second question When the deal looks slick I don’t buy the headline I read the fine print Maybe truth was never meant To fit inside a tweet Maybe thinking’s still allowed Even when it’s incomplete I don’t need to win the room I just need to live with me Yeah, I read the fine print I take my time I won’t trade my conscience For a bumper-sticker line Let ‘em shout it louder Let ‘em roll their eyes I don’t buy the headline I read the fine print Still thinking Still listening
Behind the story
Why this song exists
“Read the Fine Print” exists because we're being asked to form opinions faster than we're being given time to understand anything. A headline flashes across a screen. A clip gets shared. Somebody posts a few angry sentences. Within minutes, everybody is expected to pick a side. I think we need to slow down. I've followed politics for most of my life, and I have strong opinions of my own. But having convictions doesn't mean somebody else gets to do my thinking for me. I want to know what actually happened. What did the person really say? What's underneath the headline? What was left out? What happens if I read beyond the version that confirms what I already believe? That's where “Read the Fine Print” came from. The song isn't telling anybody which news source to watch, which party to join or which candidate deserves their vote. It's asking something harder: Pay attention. Ask questions. Read. Think. And leave enough room in your own mind to change it when the facts require you to. This song belongs beside “We’re Still Neighbors” and “Constitution Over Candidate” because I think all three problems are connected. If we stop thinking critically, it's easier to turn candidates into identities. Once politics becomes our identity, it's easier to turn neighbors into enemies. I want to move in the opposite direction. Think for yourself. Stand on principle. And remember the human being across the street. Sometimes democracy requires something as simple—and as difficult—as reading the fine print.
