Behind the story
Why this song exists
“Constitution Over Candidate” exists because I believe our principles have to be bigger than the politicians we support. I've been involved with and interested in politics throughout my life. I have my own beliefs, my own party affiliation and my own opinions, and I'm not asking anybody else to give theirs up. But somewhere along the way, politics became intensely personal. Too often, supporting a candidate now seems to require defending everything that person does while assuming the worst about everybody on the other side. That's dangerous to me. Candidates come and go. Administrations change. Parties win and lose. The Constitution is supposed to outlast all of them. That's why I wrote “Constitution Over Candidate.” It isn't telling people not to support candidates passionately. Participate. Volunteer. Debate. Vote. Stand up for what you believe. But keep thinking. Keep asking questions. And hold the people you support to standards too. If something is wrong when the other side does it, it shouldn't suddenly become right because our side did it. No politician should become more important than the principles we expect our country to uphold. This song is part of an album I'm building around common ground and civic humanity. And for me, finding common ground doesn't mean becoming politically neutral. It means remembering that none of us owns America by ourselves. We inherit it together. We argue over it together. We protect it together. And long after today's candidates are gone, we still have to figure out how to live here together. Constitution over candidate. Every candidate. Every time.
