I’m just a belly biome (biome, biome) Sittin’ on the shelf (on the shelf) Keepin’ all your systems runnin’ (ooh, yeah!) Repairin’ yourself I’ve got bugs and yeasts and microbes too (and microbes too) Each one’s got a job (got a job) That it’s born to do (ooh, yeah!) Feed me fiber (ooh, feed me fiber) I dance and play (I dance and play) Turn that fuel to energy in my own way Keep your supplements steady Stay kind and true And I’ll send that healing right back to you Down in the gut where neurons chat That’s where your peace and your power’s at CBD and BCP Anxiety melts away Dandelion root Broccoli And thyme Fuel for the garden of your insides Keep me hydrated Alkaline And pure And I’ll give you the strength you need to endure Feed me fiber (ooh, feed me fiber) I dance and play (I dance and play) Turn that fuel to energy in my own way Keep your supplements steady Stay kind and true And I’ll send that healing right back to you Keep your supplements steady Stay kind and true And I’ll send that healing right back to you
Behind the story
Why this song exists
“Belly Biome” exists because I was watching people with ALS unintentionally destroy something their bodies desperately needed them to protect. When I was working with ALS patients, I kept seeing people throw everything imaginable at their bodies trying to help themselves. Supplements, treatments, medications, dietary changes — all with understandable urgency. But in the process, many of them were absolutely bombing their gut. And they didn't necessarily understand how important the gut microbiome was, or how much damage they could do by constantly disrupting it. I wanted people to understand that their belly wasn't just this passive place where food went. There was an entire living system in there — bacteria, microbes, communication, digestion, immunity, the gut-brain connection — and it deserved to be taken care of. The challenge was figuring out how to explain something that can sound complicated and clinical without making people feel like they were sitting through another medical lecture. I grew up with things like Schoolhouse Rock!, and I've always believed there is something powerful about learning through music. When information has rhythm, repetition and a little personality, it can get lodged in your brain in a completely different way. So I gave the belly biome a voice. Instead of simply telling people what a microbiome was, I let the biome talk back: feed me, take care of me, understand what I do for you. I wanted the science to feel approachable. I wanted people to smile while they were learning. And most importantly, I wanted some of those ideas to still be playing in their heads later, when they were making decisions about what they put into their bodies. That idea became bigger than one song. It helped shape an entire educational series built around the same belief: If you can make something understandable, memorable and singable, people have a much better chance of actually remembering it. That’s why “Belly Biome” exists. I was trying to teach people to stop destroying the little world inside them — and I thought a song might make the lesson stick.
