When I was fifteen, back in the wild ’80s scene, I had a ’68 Volkswagen, beat-up but a queen. Oxidized red, little manual fire, Carried teenage dreams and every crazy desire. Jumped railroad tracks, made my daddy yell, But that tiny little bug took every hill so well. Zippin’ through the mountains, tiny car, big dreams— Slippin’ through the gaps where the muscle cars screamed. Now I’m nearly sixty with the sun in my hair, Feelin' that pull, that spark in the air. Started lookin’ at Volkswagens just for fun… And Universe said, “Oh really? Let’s get this done.” I’m the Zippy Hippy, Ridin’ toward the breeze, Manifestin’ my convertible, Top down by the seas. Where the palm trees sway And the sunshine kisses me— I’m callin’ in my R-Line Volkswagen, Let her roll on home to me. But the moment I started manifestin’ that joy, My van said, “HEY girl,” like a mischievous boy. Black Betty wouldn’t start, battery said “nah,” My big ol’ VAN-BORGHINI throwin’ drama like a star. But she’s carried me everywhere, loyal and true— Even she knows Mama’s dreamin’ something new. She’s a road warrior queen with a heart of steel, But the wind-in-my-hair bug is callin’ for real. So I smile at the signs and the cosmic tricks, Laughin’ at the Universe and all its little kicks. If a battery tantrum’s what it takes to begin, Then baby let the manifestation roll on in. I’m the Zippy Hippy, Cruisin' toward the breeze, Manifestin’ my convertible, Top down by the seas. Where Florida highways sparkle And the ocean sets me free— Callin’ in my little blue Volkswagen, Let her roll on home to me. A1A dreams, sunset glow, Radio on low, got nowhere to go. Every mile a whisper sayin’, “Girl, hold tight— Your Volkswagen magic’s comin’ into sight.” ‘Cause I’m the Zippy Hippy, Born wild, drivin’ free, Ready for my sunshine chariot, Where I’m meant to be. With Black Betty cheerin’ for me Like the queen she’ll always be— I’m manifestin’ my Volkswagen destiny… Let her roll… Let her roll… Right home to me.
Behind the story
Why this song exists
“Roll Home to Me” exists because I'm ready for my Volkswagen to come back into my life. My first car was a red 1968 Volkswagen Beetle. Oxidized red, to be precise. And I absolutely loved that car. I drove the hell out of it. I drove it like a maniac. I jumped railroad tracks. I took it over Thrill Hill. That little Volkswagen probably spent almost as much time airborne as it did on the pavement. And I made my dad crazy. I knocked the tailpipes off so often that eventually he basically gave up replacing them. But that car represents some of the happiest memories of my younger life. Friends. Freedom. Adventure. My first taste of having a car that was mine and being able to point it somewhere and go. Years later, my transportation looked very different. After more than two decades of driving vans, my Dodge Grand Caravan became Black Betty—my “Vanbergini.” She's black. Her name is Betty. Of course I blasted “Black Betty” while driving her. But one day Black Betty's battery gave out, and something clicked in my head. I'm done with vans. I don't want another practical vehicle representing the next chapter of my life. I want my Bug back. Not literally the same 1968 Beetle. I want the grown-up version of that feeling. A convertible Volkswagen Beetle. Top down. Hair blowing. Music playing. Rolling down A1A with absolutely nowhere I need to be except wherever I'm going. I already know her name. Zippy Hippy. “Roll Home to Me” is me putting the order out into the universe. I'm walking up on sixty, and I've made a decision about the rest of my life: I'm going to have fun. I've spent plenty of years being responsible, carrying things, caring for people and driving the practical vehicle. Now I want some wind in my hair. I want some ridiculousness. I want another Volkswagen. So somewhere out there is my Zippy Hippy. And this song is me telling her: Roll home to me.
