Fields of Light

A real Victory Voice Media track from the Dad Legacy Collection collection.

Read Lyrics Hide Lyrics
Some nights I dream of a starlit lane,
Harley echo and a gentle rain.
Dad and Mama in the distant glow,
Mountains high and ocean low.

Every choice that led me here,
Ran through grief and ran through fear.
But there was always one soft guide—
Ernie’s voice at my shoulder side.

I walk in fields of light where my father stands,
Guiding my heart with his calloused hands.
From Conifer soil to the Florida sea,
Every step I take, he walks with me.
Hope is the lantern I carry through night,
Because Ernie raised me in fields of light.

I am the child of mountains and flame,
Of a man who never once ducked blame.
I am the witch who heals the pain,
Of strangers standing in the rain.

When the ventilators beep and cry,
When someone wonders, “Must I die?”
I hold their hand and feel him near,
Whispering, “Stay, child. Stay right here.”

I walk in fields of light, not alone but two,
My daddy’s soul shining right on through.
From ALS wards to my own front door,
His legacy is what I’m living for.
Hope is the banner I hold up high,
‘Cause Ernie taught me how not to say goodbye.

Fields of light in a darkened world,
Carry the name of a simple man’s girl.
I’ll keep on walking till my work is done,
Then meet him again, in the mountain sun.

Behind the story

Why this song exists

“Fields of Light” exists because Fields is my family name. And my dad brought an enormous amount of light into my life. When he died, that light disappeared for a while. Everything got dark. Losing Dad wasn’t simply losing someone I loved. He was one of the foundations underneath me—the man who taught me how to work, how to care for animals, how to respect the land, how to stand up when something was wrong, and how to pick up the hammers when life started raining them down. When he was gone, I had to figure out how to live in a world where I couldn’t simply call Dad anymore. But something happened with time. The light came back. Not because I stopped missing him. Not because grief magically went away. The light came back because I began realizing that Dad hadn’t disappeared from my life in all the ways that mattered. He’s in the things he taught me. He’s in the way I treat animals. He’s in my stubbornness. He’s in the way I protect people and things I love. He’s in the way I look at the land. He’s in the way I get back up. He’s in stories I tell, decisions I make, things that make me laugh, and moments when I know exactly what Dad would have said. He’s with me every day. That’s where “Fields of Light” comes from. Fields is where I came from. Dad was one of my greatest lights. For a while after he died, the world became very dark. And then, somehow, he helped me find the light again. Maybe because I finally understood: I didn’t have to leave him behind in order to keep living. I could carry him forward. And I do. Every single day. Those are my Fields of Light.
