Chicken of the Trees
Florida Iguana Comedy Double Album
21 tracks · 2 discs
Chicken of the Trees is a 21-track Florida comedy double album built from the kind of stories that sound made up until you discover they are true. Across two discs — Living With Dinosaurs and Florida Fights Back — the album follows South Florida’s green iguana invasion from backyard landscaping, swimming pools, canals, highways, toilets and power outages into falling iguanas, hunting charters, revived reptiles in heated vehicles, tacos, ceviche warnings, viral pizza and one determined iguana swimming miles offshore. Part musical documentary, part Florida fever dream, every song has its own sound and its own factual backbone, while the full album tells one escalating story: first the iguanas move into ordinary Florida life, then the humans decide to fight back — and somehow become just as ridiculous.

The story behind the record.
This started because I wanted to write one funny song called Chicken of the Trees. I had lived around South Florida iguanas for years, including two enormous residents behind one of my homes, babies scattering across the metal rain guards, giant iguanas along the canals and roads, and enough firsthand encounters to know Florida had already handed me plenty of material. Then I opened my laptop and started researching. That was the mistake. Every search led to another true story that was more ridiculous than the last: iguanas in toilets, iguanas knocking out power, iguanas falling out of trees when it gets cold, iguanas waking up inside heated vehicles, guided iguana-hunting vacations, iguana tacos, an official warning not to put iguana in ceviche, iguana pizza, thousands of cold-stunned iguanas collected in one Florida operation, and somehow, after all the warfare, an iguana swimming miles offshore. One song became two. Two became a list. The list became a double album. Chicken of the Trees is what happened when I went looking for enough true Florida iguana stories to write a song and discovered that Florida would not fit in one song. The unbelievable parts are the true parts. The comedy comes from what actually happened, what I personally lived through, what agencies and reporters documented, and the uniquely Florida question hanging over the whole thing: after twenty-one songs, which species was really behaving more ridiculously?
Album dedication
Dedicated to Rocky
To my cousin Rocky — thank you for sending me all that music over the years. I listened: beyond The Arrogant Worms and Two Nice Girls, into all the weird, smart, funny, unexpected things you shared. You helped teach me not to want every song to sound the same.
That influence is all over this album: different genres, different personalities, and the story deciding what the music needs to be. So Chicken of the Trees is for my funny, crazy cousin with the same slightly warped sense of humor. I love you. I hope you and Eileen laugh your asses off, hear some of what you gave me in it, and are proud to have your name attached. I sure am proud to dedicate it to you.
