One small voice in a rattling bus, Looking up at Dad with a question for us. “How come YOU get a seat belt and WE don’t?” That honest sting he could not postpone. He took that line like a lightning spark, Carried it home through the gathering dark. Said, “If it’s safer for me, it should be for them,” And he walked that truth to the law’s cold hem. “Why do YOU get a seat belt and WE don’t?” Turned a quiet man into a force that won’t. He wrote and he called and he stood his ground, Till those straps were hanging in every town. Sometimes revolutions start so small— With one brave kid and a man who answers the call. At his funeral day, yellow bus rolled by, Seat belts swinging in the corner of my eye. I held it in through the flags and the guns, Till I saw that proof of the work he’d done. Tears finally fell on the Legion floor, Not for the medals or the Air Force war, But for every child he’d never meet, Riding home safe in a belted seat. “Why do YOU get a seat belt and WE don’t?” Still echoes soft wherever I roam. Whenever I see a wrong, I hear his will— If you can fix it, child, you will.
