Behind our house was a sacred room, Smelled like sawdust, oil, and bloom. Every tool hanging in its place, Order and peace in that little space. He put a hammer in my shaking hand, Said, “You can learn to build, you can learn to stand.” I climbed that roof with blistered palms, Holding my fear with his steady calm. In the shop out back, I found my spine, Learned that broken things can realign. “Measure twice, cut once,” he’d say, “And do it right, you’ll sleep okay.” That little workshop taught me this— Healing is just carpentry with a kiss. Now when I piece a cracked soul whole, I hear those nails and boards and bowls. Every protocol, every plan, Feels like building with my old man. In the shop out back, I grew up slow, Board by board in Montana snow. He built that place so I could see— There’s a maker’s heart at the core of me.
