Behind the story

Why this song exists

Story or Source Information Hiedi Handford sang with the Master Chorale of South Florida for several seasons. This composition grew from those years of rehearsals, performances, friendships, and the realization that every singer brings a unique story to the stage. While individual voices differ, together they become one instrument capable of moving audiences in ways no single voice ever could. This piece is both a tribute to the Chorale and a celebration of every community choir that creates family through music.

Before the first note rises,
Before the hands are raised,
There is a breath between us,
A silence holding space.

We come from different stories,
From lives the others may not know,
But standing here together,
We breathe—and let them go.

Deep as the earth beneath us,
Steady as the turning years,
We hold the ground together
Through the laughter and the tears.

Every voice has carried something,
Every heart has traveled long.
Here, no story stands alone—

Together, we become the song.

We sing for every heart still hoping,
Every memory carried on.
We sing for joy too great for speaking,
For the night before the dawn.

Through every sorrow, every triumph,
Every place where we belong,
One breath, one sound, one human promise—
Together, we become the song.

We have carried words through centuries,
Given ancient prayers new breath.
We have sung the songs of freedom,
We have stood with life and death.

We have raised the sound of wonder,
We have whispered grief and grace.
And when the final chord has vanished,
Something sacred fills its place.

We rise a little higher—

While we keep you standing strong.

We may reach to steal the spotlight—

But we knew it all along.

Every color needs another—

Every star needs open sky.

And every voice becomes more beautiful
When another voice replies.

We sing for every heart still hoping,
Every memory carried on.
We sing for joy too great for speaking,
For the night before the dawn.

Through every sorrow, every triumph,
Every place where we belong,
One breath, one sound, one human promise—
Together, we become the song.

No single voice can hold the ocean.

No single flame can light the sky.

But side by side, the sound grows wider—
A living answer rising high.

We are the roots beneath the music.

We are the fire within its flight.

We are the heart that binds the voices.

We are the stars that crown the night.

Not because our lives are equal,
Not because we all agree,
But harmony gives every difference
A place where it can breathe.

Ah—
Ah—
Ah—

We breathe—
We rise—
We sing!

So sing for every heart still hoping,
Every memory carried on.
Sing for joy too great for speaking,
For the night before the dawn.

Through every sorrow, every triumph,
Every place where we belong,
One breath, one sound, one human promise—
Together, we become the song.

We are more than notes and measures,
More than voices joined in air.
We are strangers made a family
By the music that we share.

And long after we have left here,
Still the melody lives on.

One breath.

One foundation.

One heart.

One light.

One voice.
One human promise.
Together—

We become the song.

Together,
we become
the song.
